The JudgmentAL World of the Know-It-All

Does having a belief or opinion always mean you’re being judgmental? Judgment, as defined by the Cambridge Dictionary, is the ability to make decisions or to make good decisions, or the act of developing an opinion, especially after careful thought. But add an “al” to the end of the word, and the definition changes to tending to form opinions too quickly, especially when disapproving of someone or something.

Mean People (Still) Suck

For those of us in the U.S., today we are celebrating our Independence Day. It was a reverse Brexit 240 years ago, and when our founding fathers did it, they aimed to see to it that our citizens had a bunch of freedoms: of religion, speech, press—and rights: to bear arms, trial by jury, etc. Of course, while they may have wanted to be all about freedoms and rights, they still allowed slavery and denied women the right to vote and own property, among other things. Sometimes What Matters Most Is Being in the Pool

I grew up less than two blocks from a couple of swimming pools. I spent most summer days there…doing crazy jumps off the board, diving for treasure, creating stories, and generally horsing around. Notice “swim laps” was not in that little rundown. Though I love swimming, I’m no real swimmer. I mean, I can swim—my dad made sure I knew how—but I could never be competitive in it.
